This message appears when the Connection Manager service installed on your PC or database server is incompatible with the installed version of Sage 50 Accounting.
This may happen if you access or create company data on a PC that doesn't have the latest version of the Sage 50 Accounting Connection Manager installed.
To resolve, install the latest version of Sage 50 Accounting on the affected PC or server. All installation options include the Sage 50 Accounting Connection Manager.
This message appears when a program is unable to find the computer it is trying to connect to. Make sure that:
- There are no errors in the Location path pointing to your company data
- You have permission to access the Location to which you are trying to connect
- The computer you are trying to connect to is on
This message appears when an unspecified communication error occurs while trying to connect to another computer. Close the program you were using to connect to your company data, re-open it, and try connecting again.
This message appears when an invalid connection password is being used by a third-party program that is trying to connect to your company data. If the third-party product is supposed to be able to connect to your data, this error should be reported to the third-party software manufacturer for correction.
This message appears when the database connection unexpectedly shuts down or cannot start up. Possible reasons for this include:
- MySQL cannot be found (it has been removed or moved)
- MySQL has become corrupted
- Your company data has been corrupted
Install the MySQL database driver:
- Close Sage 50 Accounting.
- Insert your Sage 50 Accounting installation disc into your computer.
- Navigate to your CD-ROM drive and open the bin folder.
- Double-click on the file, mysql-connector-odbc-x.xx.xx-win32.msi, to install the database driver. Note that the x's represent the file's version number.
- On the Windows Start menu, select Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and then Data Sources (ODBC).
- Click on the Drivers tab and look for MySQL ODBC x.xx Driver. If you do not see the driver in the list, repeat steps 3 and 4. Note that the x's represent the file's version number.
- Open Sage 50 Accounting.
If you continue to receive this message, you may be able to resolve the issue by re-installing Sage 50 Accounting.
If re-installing does not work, try restoring a backup copy of your company data. If the restored file works, it is likely that your working copy of your company data has become corrupted. You will need to re-enter any lost data (that is, anything you have entered since your last uncorrupted backup was made).
Note: You must have administrator rights to perform this task.
This message appears when the computer on which your company data is stored does not have enough memory available to open another connection. Close any unnecessary applications on this computer and try connecting again.
This message appears when Sage 50 Accounting is unable to close the database connection. It is possible that the engine is processing a very complex request and cannot respond, or that your computer is very low on resources and cannot complete the request to close the database connection.
You may need to restart the computer on which your company data is stored. If this happens, you will need to re-enter your last transaction if it was not processed. Check your company records to confirm.
This message appears when you try to connect to your company data, but have already reached the maximum number of connections allowed by the Connection Manager. You need to either:
- Wait for someone to close their connection and then try connecting again, or
- Edit the Connection Manager settings to allow more simultaneous connections

The message "Sage 50 Accounting cannot map the network share to a local drive path on the computer <<name>>. Check the network share's registry information." may appear because Windows has lost the mapping to that network drive. It is not uncommon for a network mapping to be lost after an update in the operating system.
If this occurs, use the Open Company dialog box in Sage 50 Accounting and select My Network Places to navigate to the data. If you don't know how to map a network drive on your computer, please consult your Windows documentation or with your IT specialist.
The message "The database engine timed out while serving the connection. Please wait a moment and try again." may indicate that Sage 50 Accounting needs to be restored or updated.
- Open the Start menu, click Settings, and then Control Panel. Choose Add or Remove Programs.
- Select Change for Sage 50 Accounting.
- In the dialog box, select Modify. You will need your installation disc to complete the update.
- Reinstall Sage 50 Accounting.
Note: The folder where the data is stored must be shared and any user attempting to connect to the data must have full control on the Security tab for the folder's Properties.
The message "The latest version of the Connection Manager is not installed on the database server" would indicate that a Sage 50 Accounting product update had not yet been performed on the computer where the data is stored, either a server or main computer. Download the product update and install it on the server or main computer. In addition, all computers with Sage 50 Accounting that connect to this data must be updated as well.
Note: If you don't have access to the server or main computer, please have your IT specialist perform any updates.
The message "A network error occurred while communicating with the Connection Manager. Please wait a moment and try again." would indicate that a file or files required by Sage 50 Accounting are being blocked by a firewall. Check the documentation for your firewall application to ensure that it is configured properly to work with Sage 50 Accounting. For further information, refer to this knowledgebase article.
The message "The Connection Manager could not start the database engine because the maximum number of connections has already been reached." will occur if the number of connections exceeds the maximum number specified in the Connection Manager .ini file located in
- Windows 7 & 8. C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Sage Software\ConnectionManager
If you encounter the message "Sage 50 Accounting cannot open the database because the database engine reported an error", please contact your IT specialist.
