Message: Some database files are read-only

Problem

This message may appear because you don't have full rights to the file or to the folder where the data is stored. Also you may not have sufficient rights to access the data from another product. This error may occur when opening data from the server or opening data on a workstation.

Solution

If the error occurs while the data is stored on the server and Sage 50 Accounting is installed on the server, you should open Sage 50 Accounting on the server and try to open the sample data.If no error occurs, then the issue would be the configuration of rights in your network. In addition, if only one workstation generates a read-only error, there is a process such as an anti-virus application, firewall, etc. that is preventing the workstation from opening a necessary port.

Use the following guidelines:

  • Ensure to use the Open Company dialog box to open the data. Browse across the network to the shared folder and open the data through the Open Company window. Don't use a shortcut to access the data across the network.
  • Copy the company data to a local folder off the root of C: and try opening the data. If a read-only error still appears, the issue is permission related and the configuration user or folder rights / permissions should be verified.
  • Depending on your network configuration, ensure that the security and permissions are correctly set for the users who need to access the data.
  • Check the firewall settings.

Note: If you have tried the other methods and have also tried opening the sample data, the read-only error is related to an incorrect configuration or installation of the .Net Framework 2.0. Refer to this knowledgebase article for instructions.
